It’s fantastic that penguins are so popular, despite how little access we have to them. Your image of penguins probably primarily comes from movies and commercials.
They’re often portrayed as cute, cuddly, funny, and intelligent animals, and they even get personified.
So, do these portrayals have some basis? Of course, I’m not talking about the idea that they sing and dance, but are penguins smart? How intelligent are these unique birds from the southern hemisphere? Let’s discuss!
Here’s Why Penguins Are Smart:
Penguins are known to be smart because they have superb navigational skills, off-the-charts senses of direction, memory, communication skills, and hunting skills.

These skills and adaptations have allowed penguins to thrive despite appearing like helpless little beings who can’t walk very fast.
All of the qualities mentioned above are essential for penguins to acquire sustenance and build a strong community.
It is difficult to quantify how intelligent different animals are. Most animals demonstrate their smarts through their ability to survive and thrive. Penguins have proven their ability to do this exceptionally well.
What Is the Smartest Penguin?
It’s hard to assess which are the smartest amongst all penguin species, but these are some that stand out:
The Adelie and the Chinstrap penguins are known to have superb navigational skills and memory because they are the ones who can, year after year, identify their scrapes or nests.
Furthermore, King penguins are known to segregate tasks within a colony effectively. Emperor penguins also have a tight-knit community. They even huddle up when it gets too chilly, denoting a high level of intelligence.
Of course, African penguins are also considered very intelligent as they can adapt well to various conditions and are experts at evading large predators in the water.
Are Penguins Smarter Than Humans?
There’s no definite way to measure if an animal is smarter than a human, but it’s clear that they are not. As endearing and intelligent as these penguins are, they are certainly not smarter than humans.
But, penguins have many abilities that humans cannot do naturally.
For example, penguins are superb swimmers. Not only are they vicious hunters when in the water, but they can also see very well under it.
Penguins’ communication skills are also excellent, along with their babysitting skills. And, let’s face it, penguins are likely better than humans when it comes to handling relationships. They mate for life — and they rock a mean tuxedo naturally!
Kidding aside, penguins are pretty intelligent and more innovative than most animals on our planet.
Unique and Amazing Penguin Traits (That Prove That They Are Super Smart)
Even if it’s all just instinctual or needed to survive, penguins’ intelligence is still up on the charts if you compare them with other animals on our planet. Here are a few traits to prove how smart they really are!
Excellent Navigational Skills and Memory
Penguins have a superb sense of direction which helps them tremendously when navigation is necessary. Even baby penguins that are just a few months old know how to find their way back to their home environment.
It turns out that penguins use visual cues of their surroundings to know where they are and where they need to go. This also proves that they have an incredible memory. They remember hills and riversides to map out places.
They also even remember noises to make their way back to their colony.
There are even penguin species that can identify their scrape (nests) year after year. That’s just how good their navigational skills and memories are.

Communication Skills
Given that there are thousands of penguins in a colony, communication is key so that the species thrives. Communication is especially crucial within penguins when it’s mating season.
One thing that the movies have gotten right is that penguins are very romantic animals. They bark and make loud noises to attract potential mates.
Not just any noise, either. Penguins can identify the bark of their mate even if there are thousands of other barks happening all at the same time. And, of course, they find their way to them.
Penguins do look alike with predominantly black and white colors, so you can only imagine how their means of communication is crucial to aid their instincts.
Hunting
What’s the point of living in a colony if you can’t all work together to catch a great meal, right? Well, penguins absolutely do. They use their numbers in their favor to hunt for food.
Penguins have figured out that hunting alone is not as productive or effective as hunting in groups. Penguins have also found a way to effectively sort out group-related issues, so their collaboration work.
Once again, communication is key, and we’ve already established that penguins are pretty adept at that. Through rapid communication, penguins relay information to each other and predict where fish or whatever they are hunting for will surface to catch them effectively.
Building a Harmonious Colony
Within a large community, there’s a lot of responsibility. Do penguins have leaders? It turns out that some species do have a designated leader in their colonies.
But, it’s not a leader in the sense that there’s one penguin that rules them all. That’s very human, after all.
Penguin colonies have specific leaders to do specific tasks, like hunting or taking care of the eggs or the young.
Speaking of taking care of the young, penguins know how to take care of their babies once they’ve hatched from their eggs. They divide labor amongst themselves and assign capable penguins to specific tasks.
Now, if that’s not intelligence, then we don’t know what is!
Are Penguins Smarter Than Dogs?
Penguins are super smart, as a matter of fact, they rank in the top 10 smartest animals on the planet. But, dogs are said to be a lot smarter.
Dogs may be as intelligent as a 2-3-year-old baby. So, they probably edge out penguins just a little bit. Penguins, though, have many skills that dogs cannot perform.
Also, penguins rank way up on the intelligence ranking list with octopuses, dolphins, and orcas, which are all aquatic animals.
Final Thoughts
Regardless of how intelligent penguins are, it’s certain that they are one of the most adorable creatures on our planet. That’s why we must do everything we can to help their species thrive.
Yes, we are the more intelligent species, so it’s our responsibility to create a better world for those we share it with.
